Parking charges in Dacorum set to be frozen until 2028

Parking charges across Dacorum are set to be frozen until 2028.

Documents published ahead of a Dacorum Borough Council meeting next Wednesday (November 11) reveal no increase in parking charges is planned for the 2027-2028 financial year.

It means charges for on-street parking and parking at all council-owned car parks would remain at current levels until April 2028.

A council report said that income from parking is currently £177,000 higher than expected, though the “cost of operating on-street parking still outweighs the income generated”.

The potential freeze will be considered by the council’s finance and resources committee next week, and is expected to go before the authority’s cabinet in December.

The cost of subscribing to garden waste collections is also expected to be frozen at its current level of £60 per year.

A report said operating costs of the service have increased but added: “The number of subscriptions has seen a 3.5 per cent reduction compared to 2025-26.

“It is felt that with the current cost of living pressures any further increase could lead to further reductions in subscriptions, reducing the benefit of this service.”

But some charges are set to increase next year to avoid the potential £600,000 budget gap that could arise if all were frozen at current levels.

Commercial waste services will rise by around 5%, while the cost of renting a garage will increase by 2% from £16.73 to £17.06 per week.

A number of other charges, such as licensing applications, will also rise by 2%.

The council report said officers had considered the current rate of inflation - around 3.5% in the last year - but concluded that increasing fees across the board by above 2% would not be “appropriate” given the “current cost of living pressures”.
