The biggest local story is undoubtedly the green light for 700 new homes on green belt land off Berkhamsted Road, on the northern edge of Hemel. Dacorum councillors approved the principle of the development despite concerns about traffic and the loss of green space. The scheme also includes a primary school, care home, children's home and neighbourhood centre, with 40 per cent of the homes designated as affordable. With hundreds of residents objecting, the debate over how Hemel grows is far from over. Read the full story.

Public safety was also in the spotlight after police released footage of an officer tackling a cyclist in Marlowes Shopping Centre. The 18-year-old suspect was allegedly carrying a knife and taser, and officers seized weapons and class A and B drugs. The officer was injured during the arrest, and investigations are continuing. It is a stark reminder of the challenges facing those tasked with keeping our town centre safe. Read more.

There is more change on the horizon for our roads, too. Planned utility works will bring temporary closures across Hemel, Berkhamsted, Tring and surrounding villages, while fresh planning applications include a proposed home on Berkhamsted High Street and alterations to historic buildings. If you are travelling in the coming weeks, checking diversions before setting off could save a frustrating detour. See the road and planning updates.

Away from the serious business, there is a little Halloween magic to enjoy. Hemel's free Pumpkin Trail runs from October 24 to November 1, with ten pumpkins decorated by local primary schools hidden around participating town-centre businesses. Families can follow the trail and enter a draw for a £50 shopping voucher – a welcome excuse to explore the town during half-term. Find out how to take part.

And finally, a sporting result to cheer: Hemel Storm maintained their unbeaten league start with a nerve-shredding 93-88 win over Essex Rebels. Alex McNaught delivered the decisive late heroics, while Victor Olarerin contributed 23 points. Seven straight wins make this an exciting start to the campaign – and supporters will be hoping the momentum continues at the StormDome. Read the match report.

From decisions that will shape our town for years to come to a pumpkin hunt for the family, it has been quite a week in Hemel. As ever, we'll keep you updated on all the news from across Hemel Hempstead, Dacorum and wider Hertfordshire right here.
