Volunteers shine in British Heart Foundation’s Christmas volunteering campaign

Two much-loved volunteers from the British Heart Foundation (BHF) shop in Hemel Hempstead are taking centre stage in the charity’s Christmas volunteering campaign, inspiring people across the UK to give the gift of time and volunteer this festive season.
Eileen Thomas, 83, and Yash Nandakumar, 20, are featured on big screens and posters in BHF shops across the country, encouraging the public to lend a helping hand and support their local BHF shop during the busy Christmas period.
For Eileen, volunteering is deeply personal. After undergoing bypass surgery 20 years ago, she’s been a dedicated member of the Hemel Hempstead team ever since. “You really get to know people who come in,” she says. “It’s lovely when someone says hello on the bus because they’ve seen you in the shop. I suppose that might happen even more now that I’m on the big screens!”
Eileen, now retired, says volunteering has a positive impact on her wellbeing and urges others to give it a try: “If people ask about volunteering, I always say come on in – you’ll enjoy it. I’ve been here 20 years and love it!”
Yash began volunteering while studying at college and working part-time. He said: “The best part about volunteering is getting involved in campaigns like this. It’s something I’ve never done before, and I loved that volunteers like Eileen and me could take part.”
Shop Manager Tessa Walls couldn’t be prouder: “We’re thrilled to see Eileen and Yash featured in the campaign – they’re our very own local celebrities! Volunteers are vital during the festive season when customers are looking for everything from Christmas gifts to party outfits. Incredible volunteers like Eileen and Yash help keep our doors open and our customers happy. We simply couldn’t do it without them.”
Volunteering with BHF offers more than just giving back – it’s a chance to make new friends, learn new skills, and enjoy in-store discounts (perfect for Christmas shopping!). Plus, volunteers can expect a warm welcome, hot drinks, and plenty of festive cheer.
