Major £8.9m upgrades planned at Apsley Railway Station including three new lifts
Network Rail has announced plans to revamp a train station in Dacorum in a project costing £8.9m.
Government funding has been secured to revamp Apsley Railway Station and make the site more accessible to passengers.
All platforms will be ‘step free’ after the upgrades, the rail body confirmed and three new lifts will be installed at the site. Currently only platform 4 can be easily used by wheelchair users, but once the three lifts have been built into the existing footbridge all four platforms will become more accessible.
Other approved plans include: additional CCTV in lifts and other areas, plus improved lighting around the station. Help points and fire refuge areas will be set up to assist people who need mobility assistance.

Network Rail revealed parts of the station will be closed during the construction and a compound area will take up space in the passenger car park. During the scheme all customer parking spaces and vehicle access to the station approach road will be closed to the public.
Passengers are advised to use the car parks at nearby stations in Kings Langley and Hemel Hempstead. All platforms will remain in use, but will be shortened to allow engineers to work safely, Network Rail confirmed.
Network Rail is hosting a community event outlining the changes at Apsley Community Centre on March 10 between 5-7pm. Work is scheduled to start in March 2026, with the project due to finish around December of this year.
Elinor Weymouth, project manager for Network Rail said: “This upgrade is an important investment for passengers in Apsley, bringing step‑free access to all platforms for the first time. We’ll be at the community drop‑in event to talk through the plans and answer any questions about how the work may affect people locally.
“We’re working closely with London Northwestern Railway to keep disruption to a minimum, and we’d like to thank passengers and the community for their patience while we deliver these essential improvements.”
Passengers are advised to check their journey during the work by visiting the National Rail website here. Funding for the scheme was approved via the Department for Transport’s Access for All programme.
