From coding genius to community champion

This weekend, Mike will be joining more than 80 singers in A Celebration in Song at Berkhamsted's Centenary Theatre.

Mike Thompson, owner of IT solutions company MDAT and Patron of The Sing Out Project, is using his business success to champion mental wellbeing through the power of grassroots performing arts.

For Mike, solving a seemingly impossible problem is all part of the job. As an experienced engineer and the driving force behind IT solutions company MDAT, he thrives on finding answers to complex technical challenges that leave other people scratching their heads. But there is another side to this entrepreneurial talent. Beyond the world of software, code and complicated IT systems, Mike is passionate about giving something back to the communities around him.

Having built a successful IT business and subsequently sold it, Mike wanted his achievements to have a wider purpose. Today, that commitment includes backing grassroots musical concerts, films and amateur dramatics - recognising the important role that singing, creativity and performing can play in supporting people's mental wellbeing.

As Patron of The Sing Out Project - which exists to provide ordinary people extraordinary performing opportunities - Mike helps people experience the connection, joy and wellbeing that comes from singing and performing together. His philosophy is rooted in a simple belief: everyone deserves the opportunity to feel included, discover their potential and be part of something positive.

Taking centre stage for mental wellbeing

Mike understands that investing in people can deliver benefits that extend well beyond a single event. A community theatrical production offers opportunities to learn new skills, make friendships, develop confidence and work towards a shared goal. For those who may be experiencing isolation, stress or other challenges, joining a choir or theatre group can provide a valuable sense of belonging.

Through his patronage of The Sing Out Project, he is helping champion these opportunities and the belief that singing should be accessible to people from all walks of life. But his support goes beyond funding, he directs highly-successful shows, ensuring inclusivity is at the core of the production and sometimes he manages backstage or performs in them too.

This weekend, Mike will be joining more than 80 singers in A Celebration in Song at Berkhamsted's Centenary Theatre. Taking place on Saturday 31 October 7pm and Sunday 1 November 2pm, the concert brings together The Sing Out Project and Berkhamsted Theatre Company.

For this concert, Mike will be among the performers, not just backing them, sharing the stage with fellow singers. His involvement means he will experience first-hand the camaraderie and shared sense of purpose that he is so keen to encourage. The event also has a charitable purpose with funds raised going to Mind Hertfordshire.

Mike Thompson's story is a reminder that entrepreneurship and philanthropy can go hand in hand. Through his patronage, sponsorship and participation in community arts, he is helping others discover what they can achieve when they are given the opportunity and support to be involved. He is currently supporting a budding film-maker with a Christmas film. Next year he is directing the much-loved Guys & Dolls, with Vale Musical Society with some exciting projects with The Sing Out Project in development.

A Celebration in Song takes place at Berkhamsted's Centenary Theatre on Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November 2026. Tickets and further information are available through www.singoutproject.org or www.centenarytheatre.com.
