Hardy competitor Jan finished the race in a time of 10 hours and 51 minutes to come home 222nd out of 307 starters – a feat in itself, as 62 runners failed to complete the race.

Conditions this year, including some 30 miles of mud, were “brutal,” said Jan.

She added: “Apparently they were the worst they’d been in the past four years; it was the hardest and most painful event I have ever completed.”

Jan, who completed Challenge Roth, an Ironman-distance triathlon last summer, is set to take on a number of long-distance challenges this year.

She will tackle the 185-mile London Revolution two-day cycle sportive, which winds through every county around London, followed by the Jubilee River 10k swim, the Ironman Zurich triathlon, the Yorkshire Marathon, and finishing with the Stort 30 ultra-marathon.
