Berko await their date with destiny after booking FA Cup first round spot
The Comrades made history with their win over Southend
Berkhamsted are awaiting their FA Cup fate after pulling off a shock win over Southend to throw their name into the first round hat for the first time in their history.
The Comrades made history with a classic FA Cup upset on Saturday to beat Southend 2-1 at Roots Hall, with Jeffrey Sekyere’s 88th minute winner sending Berko into the first round draw for the first time in their history.
It was a goal which sent manager Chris Devane knee-sliding down the touchline in celebration in front of 600 travelling fans, earning him a booking from the referee, but one which will live long in his memory.
“It’s hard not to get emotional,” he said. “Everyone puts so much in for this club.
“It’s a phenomenal day, and that’s one of my proudest moments. We wouldn’t have brought ten fans here a few years ago, and we got 600 today.
“We did something really special before the game, showing the players some emotional clips and videos from their loved ones. And we told them to trust us.
"We didn’t just nick it, we had so many chances, and by far the better of them. You need a bit of luck to win a game, but I don’t think we had a lot.”
Teams from League One and League Two will come into the competition in the draw, with Berkhamsted fans keeping an eye out for ball 77 on Monday night, with the draw taking place at around 6.30pm.
