Dacorum & Tring AC young guns firing in Gateshead

Chenna Okoh and Jackson Cowans performed strongly for the U17 boys, finishing in the top-8 of their events (400m and triple jump respectively), despite being in the younger of the two-year age group.

Chenna was second in his heat with a time of 50.32s, and qualified for the final with his time of 49.73s in the semi-final – only 0.03s off his PB. In the final, he was sixth overall in a time of 50.87s.

Jackson, meanwhile, finished a superb seventh in the triple jump in 13.04m, only 3cm off his PB.

Dom Ashwell was also selected to run in the U17 100m, but unfortunately couldn’t attend the meeting due to an injury.

Andy Jackson, recently named Dacorum’s Coach of the Year, had three athletes in his current pole vault squad competing at the English Schools.

Michael Fryer, in his first year in the U17 age group, finished sixth with a vault of 3.70m, not far off his PB of 3.90m.

Jessica O’Sullivan finished 12th with a leap of 3m, while Callum Woodage jumped a PB of 3.45m in the U15 event and won bronze.

In other news, speedster Amber Carroll won a bronze medal for Great Britain at the World Catholic Games in Malta.

Amber finished third in the 300m hurdles with a time of 47.50s, behind talented Belgian athletes Jana Horemans (46.09s) and Brett Lambeets (46.26s).

She also qualified for the final of the 400m with a brilliant new PB of 1:01.78, well up on her previous best of 64.4s, and then finished fifth overall, breaking her PB again with a time of 1:01.33.

The World Catholic Games are the international games organised by FISEC, the international sports federation for Catholic Schools.

Elsewhere, Olivia Edwards finished first as girl overall in the Lee Valley 3k fun run.
