Crabtree leads the way for the Harriers at the county championships

The Gade Valley Harriers took on the challenge of the Herts Cross Country Championships in Fairlands Valley Park, Stevenage on Sunday.

Running the hilly and muddy 12km course, Mark Crabtree was first back for the Harriers in 13th overall place in 44:09, closely followed by Matt Ashby in 49:19.

Next home was Andy Wells in 50:59, followed by Tom North in 51:19, Steve Newing in 52:28, Andy Norton in 56:00, Dean Porter in 56:38, James Thomson in 58:41, Dave Wise in 59:34 and Dean Kidd in 66:05. The team secured eighth overall position.

In the 8km race, GVH ladies’ team captain Gemma Bitaraf claimed 18th overall place and was first Harriers’ lady home in 35:43.

At the weekly 5km parkruns, GVH had 13 athletes at six different runs as William Terry and his grandfather Paul Mosely were two of the four Harriers at St Albans parkrun.

First home for the Harriers was Anthony James, bagging third place overall in 18:32; team-mate Anthony Willcox followed in 23:52, with William crossing the line in 30:12 and Paul in 30:29.

Also with four GVH runners was the Gadebridge run, where James Thomson was first back for the team and sixth overall with a time of 23:31. Next home was Paul Reilly in 25:04, Sam Tucker in 27:38 and Peter Tucker in 34:23.

Down under, in Melbourne, Australia, Mikey Ferris braved the heat and put on a fine performance to complete in 18:27 for ninth overall place.

Black Park saw John Lawler and Vince Ellerby representing the club, with Lawler first back in 19:52, and Ellerby close behind in 20:44.

Emma Nash travelled to Cassiobury Park this week where she set a new PB of 24:33, while Tom North was the lone Harrier at his home parkrun of Tring, where he took fifth place in 22:29.
