Scouts' sleepout snow surprise

On the first snowy night of the winter, 14 Scouts from 1st Apsley and three from 7th Hemel Hempstead slept outdoors to raise money for the DENS Foodbank.

The sleepout was planned to coincide with 1st Apsley’s annual Winter Camp, which usually takes place indoors at Well End Scout Activity Centre (Borehamwood).

But to continue their support of the DENS Foodbank as part of the national A Million Hands campaign, the Scouts decided on the sleepout to raise awareness of the plight of homeless people.

The young members built a ‘cardboard city’, lining the ground with cardboard boxes and barricading themselves in to shelter from the cold air.

They also used big boxes over the top of their sleeping bags and survival bags.

The Scouts warmed themselves by a huge campfire, made toast, toasted marshmallows and enjoyed hot chocolate before wrapping up warm for the cold night ahead.

The snow started mid evening and came down hard for several hours.

Over £500 has been collected in sponsorship so far.
