Safety improvements installed on A5183 between Markyate and Flamstead

New pedestrian crossing islands have been installed as the first phase of safety improvements on the A5183 between Markyate and Flamstead concluded.

Hertfordshire County Council said that a first crossing island had been installed near The Holiday Inn to improve access to the bus stops on either side of the road.

Meanwhile a second crossing island has been installed south of Hollybush Lane, to provide a better connection to the public footpath which links to Old Watling Street.

As part of the work, the road and footpath surfaces have been improved, while vegetation has been cleared along the public footpath.

Meanwhile, the bus stops have been upgraded with raised kerbs to make it easier for passengers to get on and off the buses.

The work is part of a £1.8 million programme and will include new traffic signals at the London Road and Chequers Hill junctions, as well as a reduction in the speed limit from 50mph to 40mph between the M1 junction nine roundabout, and the existing 40mph speed limit terminus west of the B4540 Luton Road.

Councillor Caroline Smith-Wright, the local member for the Bridgewater division on Hertfordshire County Council said: “These crossing islands are a small change that will make a real difference to people crossing the A5183, particularly those travelling to and from the bus stops or accessing the local footpath network.

“It's the first visible step in a much bigger programme of work on this road, and I'd like to thank residents for their patience while the works took place.

“The next stages of planned improvements are very welcome, including new traffic signals at key junctions and a lower speed limit.

“Together, these measures will help make the A5183 safer for everyone who uses it."
