The first half of the concert on Saturday evening featured Arvo Part’s setting of the Advent antiphons, best known in the hymn setting O Come O Come Emmanuel, interspersed with Advent and Christmas music spanning 500 years.

In the second half of the concert the choir performed Britten’s Ceremony of Carols accompanied by talented young harpist Tanya Houghton.

The Reverend Charles Burch, vicar of Bovingdon and who also sings bass in the choir, said: “The evocative setting of this beautiful church is perfect for choral music which ranges from the contemplative and mystical to the joyful and triumphant.

“This was a perfect way to prepare for the festival of Christmas.”
