Taking place on Sunday 18 October 2026, the 9.5-mile route will take participants from Watford General Hospital to Hemel Hempstead Hospital along sections of the Grand Union Canal towpath. The event is supported by sponsors Sigma Pharmaceuticals plc and Afya Pharmacy, who have jointly donated £2,500 to power the initiative.

Delivered in partnership with the Canal & River Trust, the event offers both self-guided and led group walking options, enabling people of all abilities to take part. Staggered start times will be available from 8am onwards.

Alison Rosen, Chief Executive Officer of West Herts Hospitals Charity, said: "As the official charity of West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, we are delighted to launch the Big Little Trail. I am personally looking forward to putting on my walking boots and taking part in the challenge alongside our brilliant supporters. Every pound raised will help improve the experience of children receiving care in our hospitals and provide comfort and support for families during what can be a challenging time.”

"Charitable funding enables us to provide equipment and enhancements that go beyond what the NHS can ordinarily fund. We hope people will join us for a fantastic day of fundraising, exercise and community spirit while helping make a real difference to children receiving care in our hospitals."

While NHS funding covers essential healthcare, charitable contributions enable West Herts Hospitals Charity to fund special projects, equipment, and environmental enhancements. Funds raised through the Big Little Trail will directly support:

  • BabyWorks ultrasound simulator: Advanced training technology that enables clinical teams to practice complex neonatal and paediatric ultrasound scans in a safe learning environment.

  • Paediatric MRI entertainment system: Audiovisual distraction technology designed to help children feel more relaxed during MRI scans, reducing anxiety and, where appropriate, the need for sedation.

  • Watford General Hospital Urgent Treatment Centre enhancement: Improvements to the paediatric area at Watford General Hospital's Urgent Treatment Centre, creating a more welcoming and child-friendly environment.

The event is open to participants aged 10 and above (under 18s must be accompanied by an adult). Registration fees start at £5 for young people and £10 for adults, with discounted family and group packages available. Participants are encouraged to set a fundraising target of £100.
