During the visit, Victoria met with local business owner Alpesh Patel, who has run Wheathampstead Post Office since 2000 and serves on the Executive Council of the Federation of Independent Retailers.

The visit focused on the vital role independent shops and post offices play in local communities, providing essential services, supporting local jobs and helping keep high streets thriving.

Discussions covered the pressures facing small businesses, including rising energy costs, increased employer National Insurance contributions and wider economic challenges.

Victoria Collins MP said: "Our local independent shops and post offices are at the heart of our communities. They are far more than places to buy everyday essentials, they provide vital services, create local jobs and offer a lifeline for many residents.

"Small retailers are facing growing pressures from rising costs, yet they continue to support local people day in, day out.

“As a Lib Dem I want to see thriving high streets, but the Government must do more to back local businesses and recognise the vital role they play in our economy and community life."

Alpesh Patel, Wheathampstead Post Office owner, said: "It was really good to discuss some of the challenges facing independent retailers locally and how that applies to other businesses elsewhere in the country. We need to ensure the Government listens to our concerns and I truly welcome Victoria's commitment to support our call.”
