The school's annual Families on the Field event took on added significance this year, providing an opportunity not only to celebrate another successful academic year but also to recognise the remarkable contribution Mr Haynes has made to generations of children and families within the local community.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Headteacher Annie Sheehan paid tribute to Mr Haynes' long and distinguished career. Mr Haynes joined Hobbs Hill Wood in September 1986 as a newly qualified teacher and went on to progress through the school's leadership team, becoming Deputy Headteacher before taking on the role of Acting Headteacher and subsequently being appointed Headteacher in 2001. Over the course of his career, he directly taught around 1,200 pupils and, as Headteacher, oversaw the education of approximately 1,500 more.

The celebration reflected the strong sense of community that has become a defining feature of Hobbs Hill Wood over the years. Families spanning multiple generations attended, including former pupils who were taught by Mr Haynes and who now have children of their own at the school. Several former members of staff also returned for the special occasion, joining current staff, governors and representatives from the local authority in recognising his legacy.

The outdoor event featured an evening of entertainment and celebration, with performances from pupils showcasing their musical and dancing talents. One of the highlights of the evening was a live performance from Elton John tribute act Elite Elton, whose set provided a festival atmosphere as families gathered on the school grounds to celebrate the school's milestone anniversary and Mr Haynes' retirement.

Miss Sheehan highlighted the enormous impact Mr Haynes has had over four decades of educational change, praising his unwavering commitment to ensuring every child received an excellent and well-rounded education.

She also spoke about his contributions beyond the school itself, including his work with Dacorum Family Services, collaboration with local headteachers, and his support for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) across Hertfordshire. His involvement in representing the views of primary schools at local authority level was also recognised.

Throughout his time at Hobbs Hill Wood, Mr Haynes has been a familiar presence at many community events, including Christmas fairs, summer fairs, sponsored walks, fireworks displays and fundraising activities. These initiatives have helped fund important improvements to the school, including playground equipment, classroom technology, educational visits and enhancements to the school environment.

In his own address to guests, Mr Haynes reflected on his journey at Hobbs Hill Wood, recalling how he first arrived at the school as a student teacher before officially joining the staff in September 1986. Over the following four decades, he undertook a variety of roles, including Maths Lead and Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO), before progressing into senior leadership and eventually becoming Headteacher. Thanking both current and former colleagues for their dedication and support over the years, he said it had been a privilege to lead Hobbs Hill Wood for the past 25 years and spoke warmly of the many children, families and staff who had been part of the school's journey.

The evening ended with heartfelt applause from children, parents, staff, former colleagues and community representatives as Mr Haynes was thanked for four decades of service and wished a long and happy retirement.

As Hobbs Hill Wood Primary School celebrates its 40th anniversary, the event served as a fitting tribute to a headteacher whose leadership has left an enduring mark on the school, its families and the wider community.
