Less well known is Totternhoe, a Wildlife Trust reserve located just to the west of Dunstable where spoil heaps from quarrying have developed into an impressive flower-rich grazed chalk grassland.

Large anthills attract the yellow meadow ant and in turn green woodpeckers to feed on the insects and larvae. Cowslips are the food plant of the scarce Duke of Burgundy caterpillar. It is also the best place in the county to see the small blue butterfly, with hundreds to be seen in the early evening along the quarry edges. Additionally, a motte and bailey castle lies next to the reserve, its steep rampart slopes forming an impressive approach to the site.

Details can be found on our website.
