Political Opinion: New measures to ease cost of living pressures in Hemel Hempstead
A package of new measures introduced by the Labour Government is now coming into force, helping to put more money in people’s pockets, bring down bills, and provide more support for those who need it most in Hemel Hempstead.
As the period of international instability continues, Prime Minister Keir Starmer is working with allies in a continued push to de-escalate the conflict in the Middle East and bring down pressure on prices.

Thanks to Labour’s decisions at the last Budget, the following measures will now come into force:
The two-child limit will be removed, benefiting 2,340 children in Hemel and helping lift 450,000 children out of poverty nationwide
The state pension will rise by 4.8%, reaching up to £241.30 per week for 16,215 people locally—an increase of up to £575 a year
Statutory Sick Pay will be available from day one of employment
New parents will gain day-one rights to paternity leave and unpaid parental leave
Universal Credit standard allowances will rise by 2.3% above inflation, supporting 12,738 people in Hemel
The National Living Wage will increase to £12.71, worth around £900 a year to some of the lowest earners
The National Minimum Wage will rise to £10.85, a £1,500 boost for over 200,000 young workers
Energy bills will be cut by an average of £117 a year, with support locked in until the end of June
A new £1 billion Crisis & Resilience Fund will support vulnerable households in Hertfordshire, including with heating oil
Prescription charges will be frozen, keeping the cost of medicines below £10
David Taylor, MP for Hemel Hempstead, said: “I know the cost of living pressures that many local families are facing and the strain this puts on household finances. People rightly expect a government that will step in and support them.
“These measures show Labour delivering on that promise—helping families, workers and pensioners to secure more money in their pockets and more rights to protect them at work.
“I’m proud to be part of a Labour Government that is delivering real change for Hemel and the villages.”
