Political Opinion: David Taylor MP celebrates historic upgrades to workers’ rights and uplift in wages for employees in Hemel Hempstead
After fighting for stronger protections for workers across Hemel Hempstead, local MP David Taylor celebrates new measures delivered by this Labour Government coming into force, providing better rights and higher pay for local people.
From 6th April, workers across Hemel Hempstead will benefit from reforms introduced through Labour’s Employment Rights Act, including:

‘Day 1’ rights to paternity and unpaid parental leave
Stronger protections for whistleblowers of sexual harassment
Strengthened Statutory Sick Pay
After hearing from employees across Hemel Hempstead about the impact of insecure and low-paid work, local Labour MP David Taylor worked closely with Government colleagues last year to pass Labour’s landmark Employment Rights Act.
Now in force, David Taylor MP celebrates this significant moment for Hemel Hempstead’s local workforce – providing stronger protections for those in insecure work, disproportionately benefiting female, younger workers, and people with disabilities.
Delivering on the Government’s commitment to make work pay and tackle the cost of living, local MP David Taylor welcomes uplifts to the National Minimum Wage and Living Wage from 1st April, ensuring the lowest paid workers across Hemel Hempstead take home hundreds more pounds yearly: £900 increase for full-time National Living Wage workers and £1,500 for National Minimum Wage.
New support for Hemel Hempstead businesses too – from 7th April, the Fair Work Agency provides stronger enforcement powers to stop the best of British businesses being undercut. Bringing together three enforcement agencies, it will crack down on bad actors and ensure everyone plays by the rules.
David Taylor MP celebrated these key improvements for local workers – introduced this month despite opposition efforts from Reform and the Conservatives to water down, delay, and block the Employment Rights Act.
Local MP David Taylor condemned recent Reform comments threatening to repeal the Employment Rights Act, stripping rights from vulnerable workers and causing business uncertainty.
Working with businesses and trade unions, these changes deliver the next stages of Labour’s landmark Employment Rights Act, benefiting over 18 million UK workers.
David Taylor MP for Hemel Hempstead said: “This month marks a defining moment for workers across Hemel Hempstead, who will now benefit from better pay and stronger rights at work.
“Constituents tell me the strain insecure work and low pay has had on their lives for too long.
“Residents deserve security in work, proper pay, and protection if sick – exactly what these changes deliver.
“I’m proud to have played my part and to be part of a Labour Government that truly backs working people.”
