The visit gave local children and families a behind-the-scenes look at the depot, including a tour of the maintenance garage and the chance to meet the team who keep Hemel Hempstead buses running every day.

The group also took a short bus ride together, with families hearing directly about how the scheme will make it easier for children to get out and about over the summer, from trips to the park to visits to see friends and family, without cost being a barrier.

The visit also highlighted Arriva's wider investment in the local area, including an ongoing refurbishment of Hemel Hempstead depot, as part of the bus operator’s commitment to reliable, affordable bus travel for the communities it serves.

Simon Goff, Arriva South managing director, said: "We were delighted to welcome David Taylor MP and local families to our depot to mark the start of this scheme.

“Buses play such a big part in everyday life and this summer we want to make sure cost is one less thing for families to worry about.

“We're also continuing to invest in our depot here, because reliable, affordable local travel is something we're committed to for the long term."

David Taylor MP said: “Free bus travel for over 15,000 children under 16 in Hemel and the villages this August means families can enjoy the summer knowing day trips and making memories will be more affordable.

“I know the cost of living remains the biggest concern for families. That’s why the Labour Government is cutting the cost of everyday journeys, with free bus travel for children this summer and the £3 fare cap reducing to £2 from January.

“This is about giving children more opportunities to enjoy the summer here in our community.”

Free bus travel for children will run from 1 to 31 August and covers participating local bus services across England. This could save a family with two children who make a weekly return trip at a £1.50 child fare £27 in August.
