Herts care provider marks Loneliness Awareness Week

"Loneliness is one of the biggest hidden challenges facing many older people”

Around one in five Hertfordshire residents aged between 76 and 85 regularly experience loneliness, according to the latest Age Friendly Hertfordshire report, prompting one of the county's leading home-care providers to call for greater awareness of the issue during Loneliness Awareness Week (15-21 June).

Abbots Care, which supports more than 1,300 clients across Hertfordshire and surrounding counties, is shining a light on the impact loneliness can have on older people and the importance of helping people stay connected to their communities.

The company recently received the Reducing Social Isolation Award at the Stars of Social Care Awards 2025 in recognition of its work tackling loneliness through its not-for-profit sister organisation, Abbots Friends.

The award celebrates organisations making a meaningful difference in helping people build social connections and reduce isolation.

Camille Leavold MBE, CEO of Abbots Care, said: "Loneliness is one of the biggest hidden challenges facing many older people. We regularly meet people who may have very limited social contact outside of their care visits, and we see first-hand the difference that companionship and connection can make to their wellbeing.

"We were incredibly proud to receive the Reducing Social Isolation Award because it recognised something that has always been central to our approach to care. Supporting people isn't just about helping with practical tasks – it's about helping them live fulfilling lives and maintain meaningful relationships.

"Loneliness Awareness Week is an opportunity to start conversations about loneliness and remind people that small acts of kindness can make a huge difference. Checking in on a neighbour, making time for an older relative or helping someone attend a local community group can all help people feel less isolated."

While loneliness can affect people of all ages, Abbots Care says older people can be particularly vulnerable due to factors such as bereavement, reduced mobility, retirement and family members living further away.

Through Abbots Friends, the organisation hosts regular tea parties in Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Dorset where people can meet, chat, take part in activities and build new friendships. Volunteers and care workers also provide companionship visits to people who may otherwise spend long periods alone.

Camille added: "One of the most rewarding things we see is the confidence people regain when they reconnect with others. Friendships are formed, people become more active in their communities, and their overall quality of life improves.

"As a society, we need to recognise that loneliness is not an inevitable part of getting older. By working together, we can help ensure more people feel connected, valued and supported."
