Have you got the Spirit to be a star?

WITH a submission deadline date of Friday, April 13 there are just days left for talented young musicians to enter Play Live – a competition which could see them playing in front of thousands as the opening acts at this summer’s Spirit of Tring festival.

Created last year by event organisers Grass Roots the contest, which has evolved to include singers as well as bands, requires all entrants to take part in one of three X-Factor style judging sessions at the Court Theatre in Tring from Tuesday, May 8 to Thursday, May 10.

Each of the three judging nights will feature different age categories and a winner will be decided on every evening.

The panel of judges is currently being assembled and will include representatives from Grass Roots and other event sponsors such as Specialist Cars and Rosewood Publishing as well as the Gazette’s news editor Victoria West, who readers will recall has just spent six weeks learning to dance in order to compete in the Hospice of St Francis charity fundraiser Strictly Learn Dance.

Our jive queen said: “This is a great opportunity for a local band to showcase what they’ve got to offer in front of thousands.

“Who knows, it could even be the springboard for bigger things in the future.”

Last year’s winners – The Lights, Social Status, Little Wolf and Coastal Cities – had a ball.

Lead singer of the Lights Flo Hill said: “We had so much fun performing to such a huge crowd.

“We were nervous but got a great reaction from the audience and it felt brilliant.”

Acts which have already registered for this year’s competition include Ego Trip, April Blue, Strange Folk and Soulshaker.

After the Play Live winners open the Spirit of Tring 2012 Cool Britannia show on Saturday, June 2 fabulous local band Soulfish will keep the energy levels high with renditions of all the soul favourites.

On Sunday, June 3 The Great British Proms takes over featuring amazing singers, the English National Orchestra and a Spitfire fly-by.

Tickets are available for the judging nights from the Court Theatre on 07543 560478. Each evening starts at 7.30pm and the bar will be open throughout.
