A super six for Dacorum & Tring AC at Herts Indoor Athletics Championships

Six Dacorum & Tring AC track athletes brought home a gold medal and a county title apiece from the 2015 Herts Indoor Athletics Championships held at Lee Valley.

Two of them achieved new championship best performances in what was one of the most successful indoor outings for the club in recent years.

Heading up the field were Phillipa Lowe and Dominic Ashwell, who both won gold in the 60m sprint in their respective categories.

Lowe, running in the senior ladies race, clocked 7.90s – a new personal best and a new championship best – in her first ever attempt at the distance.

Ashwell, meanwhile, fresh off his first race in an England vest last weekend, turned in another sub-7s performance, crossing the line first in 6.97s for another championship best.

Team-mate Mark Whyte, running in the U20 men’s age group, won gold in the 60m with a huge new personal best of 7.24s.

Lowe and Whyte both train in Deb Keenleyside’s sprint and hurdles group, and she was delighted with their results. “It’s a fantastic result for Mark,” she said. “He got a great start and picked up well.

“He is fitter and faster than he has ever been so we are looking forward to the outdoor season when he’s going to run some 400s.”

She added: “Philly didn’t get a great start but picked up well and stormed over the finish line.”

In the field events, two of the club’s two pole vaulters each took home gold medals. Alice King won the county title for the U15 girls, clearing 2.35m for a new PB, while Michael Fryer won the U17 boys’ pole vault with a jump of 3.60m.

Dacorum & Tring’s pole vault coach Andy Jackson said: “Michael has already increased his PB this year – he’s cleared well over 4m in training, which would rank him firmly in the UK top-10. Alice is just in her first year

a few months, but is progressing really well – she’s already in the UK’s top-20.”

Dan Hopper, meanwhile, won the long jump in the U17 men’s category with a top jump of 5.42m.

Elsewhere, two Dacorum & Tring AC Road Runners were in action at the Adidas Silverstone Half Marathon.

First-timer Casper Du Buisson crashed through the two-hour barrier to finish in an impressive 1:57:01 – more than 30 minutes faster than his target time of 2h 30m.

Sam Hawkridge crossed the line in 2h 04m and said she feels on track for the London Marathon next month.
