Hemel Storm boosted by sponsorship deal

The new backer was an ardent fan for the last couple of years before agreeing to sponsor the ambitious Hemel Club.

“Storm is a fantastic asset in our community and I wanted to support the great work they do in providing opportunities for youngsters to play basketball as well as the top class sporting entertainment that they provide on Saturday nights at Sportspace,” said Macleod.

“I’ve been really impressed with the people running the club, and the progress that their National League Division One team has made over the last couple of years.

“I’ve really enjoyed watching some exciting games and have been impressed with the family-oriented crowds they get. I’m hoping that the sponsorship will help the club grow over the next few years and I’m proud to be associated with them.”

Jon Burnell, club director and associate head coach, said: “The deal means we can plan more confidently for the future and are looking now to make an exciting new signing having recently lost our leading scorer, Bode Adeluola, to a professional contract in France. Hemel led for the majority of the final quarter and looked to be heading for victory, but the home side Louis Allen nailed two free throws to see his team sneak into an 86-85 lead with just nine seconds remaining.

Hemel still had time to snatch the win themselves, but a a crucial steal from Worthing’s Hank Rivers 
and a game-sealing free throw made the game safe for the home steam with three seconds left.

Hemel had done well to set up their winning position, as they trailed 23-19 at the end of the first quarter, and then 52-38 at the half-time break.

The third quarter saw Hemel stage their fightback, and a 12-0 scoring streak at the end of the 10 minutes saw them level the match at 66-66 going into the final quarter.

With six minutes remaining, Hemel actually led 77-72, but the home side held their nerve to fight back themselves and claim the victory.

Carl Josey led the Hemel scoring with 23 points and 11 rebounds.

Hemel are back in league action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to the east midlands to take on Leicester Warriors.

Storm then wrap up their programme for 2014 when they host Manchester Magic at Sportspace in the league on Saturday, December 20.
