‘We just weren’t good enough’ admits Hemel Town manager Brennan

Tudors boss Dean Brennan has slammed his side’s concentration levels after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Conference South strugglers Farnborough on Saturday.

Hemel went into the game as strong favourites, but were pegged back by their hosts in the second half after leading 2-1 at the interval through goals from James Potton and Oliver Hawkins.

Brennan was understandably frustrated by his side’s sloppy display, and said: “Our performance was nowhere near good enough. Only two of our players performed in (Dom) Hyam and Hawkins.

“I know we are young team but our concentration has cost us again – this is just not good enough.

“We have plenty of ability, but ability alone doesn’t bring success. Our communication and concentration levels have to improve.

“We have not kept a clean sheet in the league since winning 1-0 at Bromley on October 6. Farnborough have only scored three goals in their last seven games and they were all against us.

“The players know I set high standards for them but we are miles away from achieving our points total.”

The Hemel boss praised Farnborough for their battling display, but was keen to play down the talk of Hemel reaching the playoffs this season.

“Full credit to Farnborough for their hard work, especially in the central midfield area,” he said. “We didn’t get beaten, and only time will tell if it’s a good or bad point.

“But we need to stop all this playoff talk – we are playing in a league with some excellent football clubs.

“We have plenty of improvements to make before we can start looking towards gaining promotion from this level and that will take time.

Hemel are now preparing for a clash with Wealdstone on Tuesday night– a rearranged fixture following a half-time abandonment earlier this month when the Tudors were 3-0 up.

Brennan said: “We have all been spoiled at Hemel Hempstead Town Football Club over the past three seasons - we know need to keep our feet firmly on the floor and just take it one game a time and that starts with Tuesday night at home to Wealdstone.

“We all know what a great non-league club Wealdstone is and also they have a very experienced manager in Gordon (Bartlett).

“We know it’s going to be a great atmosphere at Vauxhall Road and another game we are really looking forward to.

“It will be a good test of our mental strength and togetherness.”
