Simmonds makes a point as Hemel battle back against Ebbsfleet

It was an excellent advertisement for non-league football as the spoils were deservedly shared by Hemel Town and Ebbsfleet in the first ever meeting of the two clubs at Vauxhall Road.

Ebbsfleet made most of the early running with Charlie Sheringham hitting the bar, and it was the same player who broke the deadlock after 27 minutes when he powered home a header after good work by Billy Bricknell.

The goal appeared to wake Hemel up and they thought they had levelled when Lewis Toomey volleyed home after a good run from Jamal Lowe but the linesman raised his flag for a somewhat tight offside decision.

The second half saw the visitors retreat further into their own territory as Hemel pushed for an equaliser, but Ebbsfleet looked dangerous on the break and missed a couple of chances.

They hit the bar again, when Sheringham got clear, and the follow up was also smashed against the woodwork but the flag had already been raised.

Tudors substitute Oliver Hawkins headed just wide from an excellent Connolly cross and Jordan Parkes forced Brendan Hall into an excellent save.

The equaliser appeared to be on its way and it was James Simmonds who levelled the score with a brilliant chip after good work from James Potton on the left.

Ebbsfleet missed a chance at the other end when Sherringham failed to connect with a cross and, with the game now end to end, Potton hit the post for Hemel with minutes remaining.
