Hutton is the hero as Kings edge past Godalming Town

Huge credit must go to the Town ground staff for getting the game on by using a system of sponge rollers, and the first chance fell to the hosts when Xavi Comas – back after a two month injury – pulled off a great save with his feet from Danny Bassett after a Louis Hutton free-kick.

Kings immediately broke and Lorenzo Ferrari poked the ball past the post in a one-to-one with the keeper, before two evenly matched sides settled to turn the game into an absorbing encounter.

Both defences were restricting chances to a minimum, with Town keeping their feet slightly better than the visitors, but Kings’ Ryan Plowright had a venomous shot touched onto the bar by Oneal Garnes and Will Hutton saw a shot from outside the box go just over in reply.

The home side were fielding a trio of brothers in Charlie, Will and Louis Hutton, but it was unrelated David Hutton who stole the headlines for the visitors.

He had already been catching the eye, orchestrating moves and keeping his feet when others around him floundered, when his strike on the half hour was only kept out by a remarkable touch-over by Garnes.

Seven minutes later Town conceded a free-kick, Danny Hutchins quickly rolled it to Hutton (pictured) and the latter arrowed through a regrouping defence and into the penalty area, before unleashing a fierce low shot into the far corner.

Both sets of forwards continued to struggle to find openings after the break, but Will Hutton put wide with the goal at his mercy after another Comas saving block.

At the other end, a free-kick from the scorer was parried away from the top corner.

With the rain now continuously sheeting down, the game deteriorated, but there were chances at both ends, as Comas pulled off a save from Louis Hutton, while Danny Hutchins hit the home post.

The referee was able to blow the final whistle just as the pitch was reaching a state of abandonment as Kings held on for the win
