Comrades boss Vipond hails ‘excellent performance’ against high-flying Wembley

Coming off the back of just one win in four games, the Comrades overwhelmed the league’s third-placed side to record a resounding win, courtesy of Jamie Gavin and Adiel Mannion (2).

Despite the sides being separated by nine points and four places, Vipond stated that he expected his side to win and he wasn’t left disappointed.

“It was a great result with a really excellent performance – particularly in the first half – but I have to admit it really is no surprise, despite the fact they are a good side,” said Vipond.

“With the players we have, we are more than capable of giving any side in the league a tough game and beat them on our day.

“Saturday’s performance showed that if we can maintain that high level and consistency we should be challenging for promotion; as it is we haven’t shown that, especially defensively.”

Perhaps the only blemish, in an almost flawless performance, was letting in a consolation effort – Berko’s 53rd goal conceded this season – a matter Vipond was quick to allude to.

“To beat a side on a really good run that comprehensively is great, but I would rather we kept a clean sheet as they have been few and far between,” admitted Vipond. “It was a lapse in concentration towards the end of the game.”

The hosts had to cope without their influential captain Ed Canham, as well as Max Farrelly and BJ Christie, but responded clinically to this setback.

“You need to have a good squad when you suffer setbacks such as these and we certainly have that,” added Vipond.

“Fortunately we had three very good replacements and that will increase the competition for places even more.”

Next up for the full strength Comrades is a trip to Sun Sports tonight, who sit second in the table.

Remarkably, this will be the fifth time this season that Berko have locked horns with their league rivals.

In the four previous meetings, Berkhamsted have prevailed every time after victories in the league, Challenge Trophy, Herts Charity Shield and Premier Division Cup – but Vipond is taking nothing for granted against a side who are currently on a six-match winning streak.

“They are flying at the moment and are having a brilliant season,” said the Comrades boss. “It’s a funny old game at times and to make it five out of five would be excellent, but we know it won’t be easy.”

As well as a congested fixture period, the Comrades can look forward to a Premier Division Cup final clash against Colney Heath on May 3 at Oxhey Jets’ ground.
