Berko go goal crazy as Vipond finally sees his side hit top gear

The table topping Comrades had been creating plenty of chances in recent weeks but proving wasteful in front of goal – much to the frustration of manager Mick Vipond.

But that was not the case at Broadwater on Saturday as they produced a masterclass in finishing to run out 6-1 victors over ninth-placed Stotfold, to the delight of fans and manager alike.

“Last week we were talking about the amount of chances that we created but didn’t take, but this week we created the chances and managed to put them away,” said Vipond.

“I still had a bit of a moan about the one goal that we conceded because it was down to sheer sloppiness, as opposed to laziness.

“It’s another game without a clean sheet but we scored some excellent goals and played some very good football so I can’t be too critical of the players.”

Berkhamsted are hotly tipped to win the SSML Premier Division title this year, thanks largely to an influx of players brought in by Vipond over the summer.

And the Berko boss says that strength in depth is essential if his side are to challenge for top honours at the end of the season.

“We have got to have a big squad if we are going to achieve what we want to do this season,” Vipond said. “That’s what I keep telling the players; we can’t challenge if we only have a squad of 14 or 15 men.

“To be honest, the big squad is taking care of itself at the moment because we always seem to have some players who are injured or unavailable.

“It will be a nightmare when everyone is fit but it will be a nice nightmare for me,” he added. “It’s a very good situation to be in.”
