Dacorum bowls round-up: Including an impressive show from youngsters at Berkhamsted BC

Two Berkhamsted lads went head-to-head in the final, with 11-year-old Jamie Roberston pipping Jak Chowdhary by one shot after all players had played four games prior to the final.

All players also received a bowls measure and certificate funded by a generous sponsor. The club is hoping this becomes a new date in the calender and inspires youngsters to pick up a bowling ball and have a go.

Elsewhere, Berkhamsted had two good friendly wins this week.

The first was against Wingrave which they won by 133 shots to 72, with a top team of Sandra Dann, Peter Batchelor and Ken Maynard.

The second win was against Chalfont St Giles, where a top team of Steve Burrell, Margaret Goodwin and Bill Howells helped Berkhamsted to win 81-70.

At the ladies’ gala at Potten End, a team of three from Berkhamsted – Carole Dunn, Anne Furlong and Jackie Cormack – finished third against teams from throughout the area.

> Hemel Hempstead

After a heavy midweek defeat away to Chesham, the Hemel men bounced back with an excellent 85-57 win over Batchwood Hall on Saturday.

Hemel’s top rink of Roy Barlow, Jeff Streeter, Mark Woodcock and Brian Smith were on sparkling form.

It was sweet revenge for Hemel as Batchwood had won in the St Albans & District Triples League the previous evening, with Hemel snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

The mixed match against Radlett on Sunday was curtailed due to rain, with Hemel leading 49-26.

> Kitcheners

Kitcheners travelled to Harpenden for a four-rink mixed triples match and lost 74-58, despite the efforts of top rink trio Alan Doydge, Micky Woodman and Ian Davis.

On Saturday, the club played Luton Co-Op at home in a four-rink mixed rink match and lost 84-64. Highest rink for Kitcheners was Woodman, Mike Waterhouse, Jan Perry and Bill Hunt.

Sunday’s match against Abbots Langley was cancelled and so 10 pairs played a spoon drive which was won by Ken Woodward.

> Tring

Tring came off second best to Potton End in their Dacorum Shield match – losing by two matches to one and by 58 shots to 50.

In their friendly at Kitcheners, Tring went down 45-34, and the losing theme continued when the club visited Bletchley. They were beaten 89-50, with top rink going to Jo Boniface, John Young and Dave Dickinson.

Lyn Boniface, however, had a comfortable 21-7 win in the County Singles and progresses to the quarter-finals of the competition.

> Potten End

Potten End BC held the first of their Open Galas at the weekend, with ladies’ teams coming from many of the surrounding clubs.

On a delightful day for bowling, a team from Radlett ran out winners of the top prize.

Meanwhile, the club enjoyed mixed fortunes in friendly matches this week.

A mixed team visited Batchwood and produced a convincing win by 88 shots to 54. Top rink went to Alan Clements, Cyril Pike, Jean Murphy and Keith Gissing.

A men’s team visited Dunstable and found it difficult to adjust to the very fast green. Despite a spirited recovery, they lost the match by 73 shots to 81. Top rink was won by Reg Row, Bob Simpson, Roy Moore and Jack Frogell.

In the latest round of the Watford and District Friday League, the Ccub scored a notable victory against Townsend by 40 shots to 28.

> Ashley Green

Ashley Green Short Mat Club are in search of able bodied people to put the mats out for their weekly sessions.

The club meets in Ashley Green Village Hall every Wednesday afternoon between 3pm and 5pm.

The club always welcomes new members, but unless they get help putting the mats out, they may have to shut shop.
