A battling performance sees Berkhamsted fifths fight back to earn a draw

The Berkhamsted & Hemel Hempstead Hockey Club men’s fifth team battled to a hard earned 2-2 draw against Shefford & Sandy.

Berko started the match shakily, with players from different teams in different positions, however some good play from Richard Korn, Tim Duncan and Andy Prentice created a number of chances.

It was Shefford who took the lead with a powerful effort, and they extended their advantage just before half-time through a short corner.

Berko rallied well after half-time, though, and within 10 minutes of the restart they had levelled the scores with a fine strike from Tim Buckley at a short corner, followed by an excellent goal from Tim Duncan.

Elsewhere, the ladies’ first team were unlucky to lose 2-0 to Leighton Buzzard II, with both teams missing players due to half-term, while the thirds went down 2-0 against Aylesbury.

In other news at the club, coach Matt Coombes says farewell this week as he heads back to South Africa to take up a full-time post at one of the leading independent schools in the country.

The club has also said a big thank you to everyone who helped out at a work party at the weekend – including Roger Macklin, Iwan Roberts, Jim Carlile, Kate Jenkinson, Becca Bowman, Patricia Steed, Jo Fisher, Sandra Moorhouse, Nick Cave, Simon Kaye, Pete Allam, Nigel Edwards, Paul Dubenski, Ian Odell, Ben Moorhouse and Mark Johnson.

The club has a full fixture list this week, including a clash between the men’s first XI and Luton Town. The ladies’ firsts, meanwhile, take on Cheshunt.
