Tesco is making an extra bid to cut down on plastic waste, by pledging to no longer sell cans of beans and soups in multipacks.

The supermarket chain has announced that they plan to get rid of multipacks that are shrink-wrapped in plastic packaging, including both own-brand and branded tinned goods.

This is a further step in the chain’s aim of cutting out one billion pieces of plastic from its own products by the end of 2020.

Removing millions of tonnes of plastic

This environmentally conscious decision from the supermarket will remove around 350 million tonnes of plastic a year from circulation - and Tesco is the first of any major UK retailer of its kind to make this change.

The company has said that this move will see 67 million pieces of plastic removed from its stores, as currently, more than 40 per cent of Tesco customers buy tinned multipacks, with 183,000 sold every day across its stores.

The supermarket has teamed up with brands like Heinz and Green Giant in order to remove all plastic-wrapped multipacks. The plan is to replace multipacks with multi-buy deals instead.

The change will apply to all canned food, including staples such as baked beans, soup, tinned tomatoes and sweetcorn.

When will it come into place?

Tesco is set to cease their ordering of any plastic-wrapped multipacks from 2 March 2020.

However, the supermarket will continue to sell down any remaining stock.

Will the multipack prices remain?

Although customers will see multipacks disappear from shelves, the prices are still set to remain the same.

Tesco chief executive, Dave Lewis, said, “We are removing all unnecessary and non-recyclable plastic from Tesco.

“As part of this work, removing plastic-wrapped multipacks from every Tesco store in the UK will cut 350 tonnes of plastic from the environment every year and customers will still benefit from the same great value ‘multipack’ price.”
