There's still time to apply to be a cruise ship 'godparent' - here's what it means

Multinational travel group, TUI, is on the hunt for a pair of so-called 'godparents' to bring good luck and protection to new river cruise ships - with travel included as a perk of the job.

What is a TUI 'godparent'?

The role of godparent is an ancient maritime tradition in which a civilian - often a woman - is appointed to bring good luck to a new ship. Duties have traditionally included christening new ships by smashing a bottle of champagne against the hull.

This is the first time the company has ever recruited for the role outside of the organisation. High profile godparents in the maritime industry include The Duchess of Cambridge, singer Kelly Clarkson and Dame Helen Mirren.

What does the role involve?

Godparents are expected to "work with the TUI River Cruises team to provide expert opinion and counsel on the exploration credentials of a TUI River Cruise", as well as attending the exclusive launch ceremony for TUI Isla and TUI Maya river cruise ships in March 2020.

The lucky pair will also carry out "river testing" on selected cruise routes later in the year.

This travel could include routes on the Danube, Rhine, Moselle, Main and Dutch and Belgian waterways.

What are the requirements?

You must be over the age of 18 and a resident of the UK or Channel Islands to qualify for the position. Employees and immediate family of TUI are not eligible to apply.

TUI has stated that it is looking for applicants with "a spirit of exploration and discovery" and "an insatiable desire to explore". Applicants will also need to be available for certain travel dates and happy and "confident" to appear on camera.

The job avert also states that age is "no obstacle" when it comes to applying.

How long does the position last?

The godparent role is an honorary position which gives you a title for life. There is no salary, and duties beyond the first year will be agreed on an annual basis.

How can I apply?

The application form is live on TUI's website and will be accepting applications up to 11:59pm on Monday 24 February 2020.
