Singer Rebecca Black has revealed how releasing her song Friday left her feeling depressed and bullied

Singer Rebecca Black has opened up about her struggle with depression, since the release of her song, Friday, nine years ago.

Black (now 22) shot to fame at 13 when the music video for her song Friday was released on YouTube and rapidly became a viral sensation.

In an emotional social media post to commemorate the anniversary, the singer revealed how she had food thrown at her at school and how she had felt ”terribly ashamed of herself” and “afraid of the world” after the song came out.

Black, who faced serious online bullying following the 2011 song’s success, wrote on Twitter, "Above all things, I just wish I could go back and talk to my 13-year-old self who was terribly ashamed of herself and afraid of the world.

“To my 15-year-old self who felt like she had nobody to talk to about the depression she faced. To my 17-year-old self who would get to school only to get food thrown at her and her friends.

"To my 19-year-old self who had almost every producer/songwriter tell me they’d never work with me.”

Black went on to say she learned to not be “defined” by that time in her life.

“Time heals and nothing is finite. It’s a process that’s never too late to begin," she wrote.

'Blown away by the support'

Despite its popularity Friday was critically panned, and went on to become the subject of numerous online parodies and memes.

Black’s tweet posted on Tuesday (11 Feb) has been retweeted over 51,000 times and the singer has received enormous affection from fans.

“I am just so blown away and confused and grateful at the messages you guys have been sending to me in response to this,” Black wrote in response. “I could have never imagined support like this.”
