Online trends and challenges have provided people with essential entertainment to keep themselves sane during lockdown.

From fundraising challenges such as Run for Heroes, to the Me at 20 Challenge, showing off pictures of your younger self, there’s been plenty to get involved with.

This is everything you need to know about the latest social media challenge sweeping the internet, driven by Hollywood actress and 1960s it-girl Goldie Hawn.

What is Goldie Hawn’s #laughingchallenge?

As described in the original Instagram caption of the video, the challenge entails uploading a video of yourself laughing.

You can do it by yourself, or with your kids, family, friends or even pets.

You should tag Goldie Hawn’s official account on Instagram (@goldiehawn) in your video, and include the hashtag #laughingchallenge.

The best videos will be reposted by the 74-year-old Private Benjamin actress.

The challenge was made in part by MindUP, a nonprofit organisation and signature programme of the Goldie Hawn Foundation, which strives to tackle the epidemic of childhood aggression, anxiety, depression and suicide.

Where did the challenge come from?

Posting to her Instagram account, Goldie Hawn uploaded a video in which she explains a new idea for a social media challenge.

In the video, Hawn says: “Hi everybody, I had a really, really good idea. I know laughter is so important, it helps so many parts of our being, and it’s great for our health, if we just laugh just once a day.

“A baby laughs on average 72 times a day, which is something I read, and I wondered, where does that laughter go?”

“So let's just do a challenge, all of us, and if you could film your kids laughing, you laughing, it’ll be beneficial,” She continues before getting interrupted by someone tickling her with a long fern leaf off screen.

Writing in the caption for the video, Hawn outlines the health benefits of laughter, including: “boosts immunity, lowers stress hormones, decreases pain, relaxes your muscles, prevents heart disease, eases anxiety and tension”.

What celebrities have done the challenge?

Loads of social media users have been getting involved with the laughing challenge, and that includes celebrities.

Posting to her Instagram account, Kate Hudson uploaded a video of herself and her young daughter Rani laughing together.

In the caption, she wrote: “Laugh with us! @goldiehawn #LaughingChallenge I tried to get Rani to laugh with me, and turns out she knew exactly what she was doing! #BornComedian #Laugh POST A LITTLE LAUGHTER”

Graphic designer and reality TV The Bachelor star Catherine Giudici also posted her own contribution to the challenge.

Taking to Instagram, she posted a video of her young child messing around, with her laughing in the background.

She wrote in the caption: “Anyone have a good contact for a virtual exorcist? #laughingchallenge”

Goldie also posted a new video about the challenge on Thursday 21 May, a day after her original video was made, thanking everyone for their participation so far.

She added a compilation video of some of her favourites, thanking fellow celebrities for taking part such as Kate Hudson, Chelsea Handler, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Gretchen Rossi.

You can still get involved to be featured in future compilation videos.
