Just four of the 24 actors, actresses and directors nominated for an Academy Award will depart the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles with an Oscars statuette - but that doesn't mean the "losers" will be going home empty-handed.

As is Oscars tradition, ludicrously lavish goodie bags will be handed out to actors and actresses nominated for best actor, actress, supporting actor and supporting actress, as well as the five film makers who received a best director nod.

Typically a source of controversy due to the overindulgence, the goodie bags are nonetheless a source of fascination due to their priceless, and often bizarre, contents.

The "bags" are curated by Los Angeles marketing company Distinctive Assets, with gifts delivered in suitcases prior to the glitzy Hollywood bash.

The total contents of the 2020 goodie bag are reported to be worth $225,000, with gifts including hydrogen infused water, an Antarctic cruise (valued at $78,000), a romantic getaway to a Spanish lighthouse and $25,000 worth of cosmetic procedures.

Sponsors pay Distinctive Assets between $4,000 and $50,000 to include their products and experiences in the collection of freebies.

In previous years the gifts have proved popular with actors and actresses, with Viola Davis tweeting about her stay at Kauai hotel Koloa Landing Resort following her Best Supporting Actress victory in 2017.

Mark Ruffalo meanwhile posted about his stay at Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria in 2015 after his nod for Best Supporting Actor, received for his performance in Foxcatcher.

The weird, wonderful and extravagant from previous years

Items included in previous years have been just as luxurious and absurd.

In 2019 the swag bag included therapy sessions with a leading phobia expert as well as annual membership at a cannabis-friendly social club.

A year earlier, nominees were issued with a "stylish" pepper spray and a 12-night Tanzania vacation for two.

The most extraordinary gifts from 2017 included a pelvic floor exercise tracker and stays at the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria in Sorrento, Italy; and the Grand Hotel Tremezzo in Lake Como, Italy.

2015 saw nominees gifted $168,000 of gifts including a $250 vibrator and a $14,584 luxury rail trip through the Canadian Rockies.
