Will new multi-storey car park solve town’s parking headache?

Dacorum Borough Council’s proposal is for the site on Lower Kings Road, which is already home to a 122-space pay and display car park owned the authority.

A formal planning application for the 331-space car park – including 15 disabled parking spaces – is due to be submitted either later this month or early January, and planning bosses have been asking locals what they think.

It is hoped the additional parking spaces will help alleviate pressure on the town’s station car park and surrounding residential areas at peak times.

A number of details for the four-storey structure are yet to be finalised, such as opening hours, price tariff and what proportion of the car parking spaces will be either short or long stay.

Cllr Andrew Williams, leader of the borough council, said: “Berkhamsted is a successful town where the mix of resident, business and commuter parking in and around the town centre is becoming a problem.

“A multi-storey car park would be of tremendous benefit for shoppers, businesses and commuters, and would relieve parking pressure in residential areas.”

If the plans are given the green light by the council’s development control  committee, work would start late spring/early summer with the car park open in time for Christmas 2016.
