UPDATED: Four to face Crown Court on slavery and servitude charges

A Hemel Hempstead man and another from Redbourn are due to face Crown Court on slavery charges in the New Year.

Ifran Iqbal, 29, of Millfield Walk in Hemel Hempstead and Paul Joyce, 32, of Redbourn bypass, Redbourn, joined 24-year-old Michael Joyce and Helen Cash, 30, both from Oxford, at a magistrates hearing in Banbury last week, on charges all relating to one 27-year-old victim.

Iqbal has been charged with one count of conspiring to require a person to perform forced or compulsory labour and one count of fraud, while Paul Joyce is charged with one count of conspiring to hold another person in slavery or servitude, two counts of conspiring to require a person to perform forced or compulsory labour, five counts of fraud and one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The offences took place between January 6, 2012 and November 29, 2013 – apart from an assault which took place on a day between November 11 and November 27, and one count of fraud which occurred in March.

All defendants have been remanded in custody to appear before Oxford Crown Court on January 2.
