The firm has targeted Berkhamsted as a possible venue for its latest inn, after trying council bosses last autumn to no avail.

Last year a total of 124 councils, including Dacorum Borough Council, were written to by Travelodge, which opened its nearby Aylesbury hotel in September 2013.

But Dacorum’s corporate director for housing and regeneration Mark Gaynor quashed any suggestion the business would be adding Berkhamsted to its repertoire, which includes venues in Hemel Hempstead’s town centre and Maylands industrial estate. He did, however, reveal the authority would be open to talks.

Mr Gaynor said: “ We have received a circular letter clearly sent to a number of local authorities. At this point I have no detailed knowledge of these proposals and would not wish to comment on whether we would be willing to support such a proposal.

“We cannot make any commitment as we are not currently in any partnership with Travelodge. We are prepared to talk to them about any plans they may have within the borough to see if their proposals are suitable. There are no sites in Berkhamsted identified for such a development.”
