Hertfordshire County Council announces additional £107m road maintenance project

Hertfordshire County Council has announced significant funding for road maintenance improvements across the county.

County councillors agreed to the significant kitty for improving road surfaces at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

Hertfordshire County Council revealed that the funding will go towards 1,069 schemes between April 2026 and March 2027.

The authority is in charge of maintaining 3,200 miles of roads and 3,500 miles of pavements, and says the latest investment will be a targeted one.

It adds that this funding comes in addition to an already agreed £30m project which deals with routine maintenance, like fixing potholes, drainage works, verge maintenance and structural repairs.

Money will go towards resurfacing roads and pavements, upgrading traffic signals, renovating bridges, expanding the number of 20mph zones within Hertfordshire, and improving the county’s walking and cycling tracks.

Councillor Stephen Giles‑Medhurst said: “This investment is about getting the basics right for residents: safer roads, resurfaced pavements and helping ensure more reliable journeys, whatever way you travel. People tell us time and again that the condition of our roads really matters to them, and this programme is a clear commitment to tackling those concerns head‑on with the resources we have.

“While we know we cannot fix everything at once, this is a practical, deliverable programme that will make a genuine difference in towns and villages across Hertfordshire. It also supports our wider ambition to fix roads, improve buses and expand more sustainable and accessible ways of travelling. It encourages walking and cycling while addressing the need to feel safer and have more appealing options for everyday trips.”
