Tring Sportspace – run by Dacorum Sports Trust – was built next to the town’s secondary school nearly 40 years ago, but now the million-pound grant from Dacorum Borough Council means the sports hall, swimming pool and changing rooms can be upgraded.

But the cash comes with the caveat that the new facilities continue to be accessible to the public outside of school opening hours.

A spokesman for Dacorum Borough Council said: “Details of the refurbishment have yet to be finalised and work is underway to identify the scope and timing of the works.”

It is thought the works will be carried out in conjunction
with the school’s wider
rebuilding programme, which is being led by central
government and remains in the planning stages.

Rod Gibberd, business director at the school, was ‘delighted’ with the news. He said: “The fact that we can now work in partnership with Dacorum and fully integrate the refurbishment into one master plan for the site is fantastic news for both the school and the community.

“Working together will not only ensure optimum value for money but it will also enable us to create something that all of us can be immensely proud of.”
