Ringway is working through a backlog of streetlight replacements after removing old lamposts

Herts County Council is working with its highways contractor Ringway to replace aging streetlights.

So far, 133 have been replaced and a further 275 columns have been cut down and are awaiting replacement. Once this backlog has been cleared over the next two months, Ringway aims to replace other lamposts within a month of them being identified.

County Councillor Terry Douris, who oversees highways, said: “We appreciate that there will be some inconvenience while this is being carried out, but ensuring the safety of pedestrians and road users is our number one priority. I’m grateful to the public for their patience while we complete this essential work.”

The electrical components inside the columns are removed and the lamposts made safe by workers with a notice posted to let residents know what is happening.

Berkhamsted householders in Orchard Avenue and Finch Road were left concerned about safety and unsure when replacements would be erected when several lamposts in their roads were cut down and taped up.

Ringway said it would revisit the lamposts to ensure they were safe but were unable to give a timescale for the streetlights to be replaced.
