Crime is down across a number of categories in Hertfordshire, according to latest police data.

New statistics released by the Police and Crime Commissioner’s office suggests crime is in decline across Hertfordshire’s town centres.

Data has been released by PCC Jonathan Ash-Edwards to highlight the changes in criminal activity across the county which he links to the commissioner’s ‘safer town centre’ initiative.

PCC Ash-Edwards launched the scheme in July of this year, it was designed to make town centres and popular public areas like parks safer for residents.

Data which was presented at a crime panel showed that recorded incidents of anti-social behaviour in Hertfordshire are down over 10% in the most recent 12 months compared to the previous year. Also that all crimes recorded in town centres is down by 6%.

A 28% reduction in criminal damage has been recorded and there has been 50% fewer public order offences.

Across all town centres there has been a 6% reduction in theft shoplifting, which amounts to 144 fewer incidents of stealing.

There were 13% fewer business burglary reports and Hertfordshire Constabulary received 66% fewer reports of cycle theft. There was a 5% increase in possession of drugs offences.

During the panel Commissioner Ash-Edwards revealed special police operations were launched to disrupt shoplifting in the Three Rivers area.

He added that e-scooter clampdowns in problem areas and raids and closures were enforced at shops linked to the sales of illegal vapes.

Commissioner Ash-Edwards said: “Our Safer Town Centres initiative has shown how bringing the police, councils, businesses and local services together can deliver real results in cutting crime and making our town centres safer.

"High visibility police foot patrols have been increased in town centres through Operation Hotspot. And our focused work over the summer cut town centre crime and anti-social behaviour.

“The work continues with more focused work over the coming weeks when town centres are busier for shopping and Christmas and New Year celebrations. Residents will see a focus on tackling retail crime, anti-social behaviour and ensuring the night-time economy is safe.

“Hertfordshire’s town centres are safe places. I want them to be even safer with visible policing so businesses can invest, and people can spend their time in our towns with confidence”.
