Voters go to the polls today for the all-out elections in Dacorum – but not every seat in Hertfordshire’s 10 boroughs and districts is being contested.

Today (Thursday, May 4) voters will be able to choose who they would like to look after bin collections, leisure centres, housing and most local car parks.

Some areas feature “all-out” or “whole council” elections, where all district and borough council seats will be put to a vote and residents can choose up to three representatives for their ward.

This year, all-out elections will take place in Dacorum, East Herts and Hertsmere.

This means every district and borough councillor in large towns like Berkhamsted, Bishop’s Stortford, Borehamwood, Hemel Hempstead and Hertford is at risk of losing their seat.

Everywhere else, a poll will take place to fill just one third of each council’s seats.

In Broxbourne, Stevenage, Three Rivers, Watford and Welwyn Hatfield, one seat (out of three) in every ward is up for election.

This means every registered voter in these areas has the opportunity to go to the ballot box today.

Voters in Chorleywood South and Maple Cross will elect two representatives to Three Rivers District Council, because there is an extra vacancy this year.

In North Herts and St Albans, not all wards are represented by three councillors.

Although most seats will be contested, some wards are represented by one or two politicians whose terms in office continue until at least next year.

This leaves some residents without an election – including in parts of Baldock, Hitchin, Letchworth and St Albans City, and all of Colney Heath and Knebworth.

Town and parish councils may also hold elections on the same day.

Every voter with an election in their area should receive a polling card with more detailed information.
