Residents in Dacorum are being encouraged to Wake Up and Dance every weekday morning.

Active Dacorum, a Dacorum Borough Council initiative, is hosting free dance sessions every weekday morning on Zoom.

The Wake Up and Dance sessions, in partnership with Dacorum Community Dance and BEEE Creative, are open to anyone and everyone.

For 10 minutes at 9am each weekday morning, the host will play three popular songs from across the decades which you can dance along to in any way you choose.

There are users who dance standing up, sitting down, from their desk, in the kitchen, front room or garden. At the end of the session everyone says a quick goodbye before getting on with their day.

Dancing to 10 minutes of music each morning has many benefits including: feeling energised and motivated for the day ahead, improving spatial awareness, aiding memory and problem solving, as well as inspiring creative thinking.

Wake Up and Dance also provides an opportunity to connect with others and become part of an online community. You do not have to have danced before, you can come along and sway, bop or tap along to the music or just enjoy listening and connecting with others.

Wake Up and Dance host, Louise White, from Dacorum Community Dance, said: “It is heart-warming to see so many people turn up in the morning to enjoy a dance together. It is a lovely way to start the day."

Annie Smith from Active Dacorum said: "Many of those joining in have said it gives them something to get up for in the morning and it has even inspired one of our participants to finish a painting that she had not previously felt motivated to complete during the lockdown.

"Having this daily connection with others and a bit of fun first thing can really make a difference to someone’s day”.

Carrie Washington, Director of BEEE Creative and fellow host said: “It has been fantastic to connect with people in their homes, dance, have a bit of fun, and start the day with such energy."

The sessions are currently running each weekday until the end of May. There is no commitment to attend every session. So why not join and get dancing?
