Police are warning the public to be vigilant after police received reports of a distraction thief operating in Hemel Hempstead town centre.

Over the weekend Dacorum's Safer Neighbourhood Team received two reports from staff working in different stores in the town centre of a female using distraction techniques to steal mobile phones.

Police are urging the public to not leave their mobile phone in plain sight either at work or even when out in a restaurant or coffee shop.

Their method is to distract you by asking a question. They then move an item like a newspaper, catalogue or their own bag over your phone before stealing it.

Be wary of someone putting something down or moving something on a shop counter or table. Keep your valuables secure at all times.

If you see anyone suspicious coming into your place of work then notify police on 999 if a crime is in progress. Alternatively, you can report a concern online at www.herts.police.uk.
