Rennie Grove highlights the benefits of charity shopping

During May, Rennie Grove is highlighting the many benefits that charity shopping can bring.

Look out for some impressive displays in your local Rennie Grove shop window highlighting the ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ theme and encouraging shoppers to get creative with their

purchases by considering how they could upcycle items and restyle outfits.

Nicola Flood, Rennie Grove’s Buying, Merchandising and Business Development Manager said: "Thanks to our supporters’ generous donations, our whole retail ethos is built on this premise of reducing, reusing and recycling which has huge cost and environmental benefits for all.

“Throughout May our window displays will highlight how you help us do this and inspire you to look at the items you buy from our shops in a really creative way.

"You may love the item you buy just as it is, but we’re also encouraging customers to think about what a purchase might become with a bit of creativity.

"It could be as simple as turning a pair of jeans into shorts or a dress into a blouse – and I can guarantee there will be some real show-stopping ideas!”

Charity retail offers a treble win with environmental benefits, affordability and charitable giving. The average charity shop transaction is just £4.05, meaning that customers can access quality and fashion at an affordable price and in a sustainable way.

And in Rennie Grove’s case, the funds raised benefit local families who are facing life-limiting illness; in a typical year the charity’s shops and eBay operation bring in more than £3 million

towards its specialist nursing care.

Even clothes too worn or torn to sell in their current state can raise funds through textile recyclers, meaning less waste in landfill.

In 2018-19, nearly 340,000 tonnes of textile waste was diverted from landfill thanks to charity retail in the UK.

And nationally, charity shops are able to sell or recycle between 85 per cent and 90 per cent of clothes, books and electrical items donated to them.

Rennie Grove is committed to ensuring all aspects of its retail operation complement the green agenda.

Nicola added: “We stock some new products too and it’s important to us that these – from bamboo socks to travel mugs and stationery to foldaway shoppers – have green credentials.

"Even our donation sacks are made from recyclable materials and we offer shoppers a recycled paper bag to take their purchases home.
