Pupils stay bright during the dark night in Hemel

During Road Safety Week, the optician in the town teamed up with road safety charity Brake to encourage youngsters to stay safe of the streets - and what better way than with some nifty high-visibility vests.

Specsavers donated the vests to Lime Walk Primary School and Nash Mills CofE School to ensure students could be seen on their school walks - especially during the darker months.

Shane Abbas Bhimani, store director at Specsavers Hemel Hempstead, said: "With the days getting darker, the vests will help make sure children are visible when they are out on the roads. With road safety being such an important community issue, we felt it was our duty to get involved with the road safety week and help out our local schools."

The high-vis vests were presented to the children during a special assembly at Lime Walk where pupils were told about the importance of eye tests and how to stay safe on the roads.

While Priti Amrania, another member of Specsavers staff, went to Nash Mills to educate eager junior travel ambassadors about eye sight and road safety.

Joshua Harris, director of campaigns from Brake, said: "Every 20 minutes, someone on a British road is killed or seriously injured. Every death or serious injury on the road is preventable and that’s why we’re asking everyone to 'step up for safe streets'. We’re delighted to partner with Specsavers as good eyesight is so important for road safety, whatever mode of transport you use to get around."
