Care leavers are young people who have been in care in Hertfordshire and are now making the transition towards adulthood.

Many of them do not have families to support them during the festive period.

For five years now, the Participation team at Hertfordshire County Council have called on their colleagues to take part in the Christmas for Care Leavers Appeal.

Staff across the Council are encouraged to donate gifts to create individual hampers with presents for every care leaver.

Around 300 young people will receive these hampers, made up from 5000 gifts donated by council staff and local businesses.

Gifts include toiletries, blankets, snacks and sweets, candles and a host of other stocking fillers.

Jenny Coles, director of children’s services said this about the care leaver’s appeal: “It’s really fantastic to see colleagues from across the council pulling together to give gifts to our young people over Christmas.

"The care appeal is a great way to help make them feel like they’re not alone.”
