David Taylor MP has announced that Derek Peverill has been named a Community Champion, recognising his outstanding contribution to volunteering across Hemel Hempstead and the wider Dacorum borough.

The award follows the recent announcement of Bovingdon’s Gary Cullum as the inaugural Community Champion, as part of a new initiative to celebrate individuals who go above and beyond to support their local communities.

Derek, aged 80, was selected following strong nominations praising his tireless work as a Volunteer Adviser for Community Action Dacorum, where he helps connect residents with meaningful opportunities from hundreds of local roles.

David Taylor MP commented on the award: “Derek’s nomination stood out for its depth and impact. His work quietly transforms lives across Dacorum. He is not just helping people volunteer—he is helping them find purpose, confidence, and connection.”

Derek’s work is defined by his remarkable ability to match the right people to the right roles. His support reaches a wide range of residents, including:

  • Individuals recovering from addiction
  • People seeking work experience or a route back into employment
  • Residents facing loneliness and isolation
  • Those simply wanting to give back to their community

His patience, experience and understanding have made him a trusted figure for both volunteers and organisations alike, significantly strengthening the local voluntary sector.
