Berkhamsted music teacher launches Songwriting4kids for young lockdown musicians

Ruth Seodi, who was the winner of Dacorum's Den 2019, made the decision to take Songwriting4kids online to reach children on a wider scale.

Aimed at children aged 8 to 13, Songwriting4kids is a fun way to learn about music, instruments, rhythm, lyrics and composition to create their own songs.

Using a series of step-by-step videos, interactive learning techniques and song-writing software, Songwriting4kids Level 1 shows children how to write their own songs with lyrics, melody and backing all at their own pace, see and hear their songs as they evolve note-by-note and perform the finished result to their families and friends.

Each level has eight modules and Level 2 goes on to explore combining instruments including wind, brass, percussion, electric guitars and synthesisers and encourages using different instrumental sounds.

Ruth has experience teaching music in Berkhamsted schools, music clubs and lockdown Zoom classes.

She said: "I developed Songwriting4kids for any child who is keen to explore their interest in song-writing, either at home or in a club group and give children with no musical knowledge a chance to shine and harness their enthusiasm and imagination.

"It proved to be a real hit, so when the schools closed, going online was a great opportunity to allow more children to get creative at home.”

Songwriting4kids is already getting rave reviews.

Berkhamsted parent Bianca Permal, said: "We have enjoyed these courses as they have provided a creative outlet alongside school work.

"It helps stretch our daughter’s imagination in a musical way and she loves showing us the songs she has created and beams with delight when sharing a new piece.”

"She has learnt more about different musical instruments and how they can work together as well as using new IT skills.

Ruth added: “I see how much children love music every day but many no longer get the same opportunities to experience the joy of music and discover new talents.
